The One Where I Get Misty-Eyed and Blame It On Pollen

Let me take a moment to wax nostalgic (is this a legitimate phrase?) for a bit.  Two of my good college friends, MOW and Bob, are coming to visit the city this weekend.  This will be the first time we’ve all been in the same room together since, what, college?  That was a long time ago.  Now I feel old.

When we were college roommates, MOW used to always get flowers from her boyfriend.  I would be jealous because I didn’t have anyone to buy me nice things.  So I would enjoy hers vicariously.  They were usually set out on the TV stand and they did wonders to make the room seem brighter.

One of the first things E asked me when we were playing 20 Questions was my favorite flower.  Without hesitation, the words “yellow tulips” poured out of my mouth.  Up until that moment, I had never given thought to it before (I tend to have trouble picking favorites), but the answer came to me so easily once it was posed.  And it’s true, I do love tulips and I especially love the yellow ones.  Sunshine yellow.  A few weeks later, I woke up to find a vase (actually, it was a beer glass masquerading as a vase) of yellow tulips next to my bed.  “Because you said you like them,” he said.   Best present ever.

Anyway, I digress.  When MOW and Bob are around, we’re always up to no good, like that time we raided a friend’s refrigerator and secretly brought all of his Whoopie Pie ice cream to Bob’s dorm room.  Then, upon hearing Bob’s roommate walking down the hall, we kicked the empty cartons under the couch and ran to hide, but not before making and putting up signs around the room that inexplicably read “SUPISE!”.  The letter “R” must have been on vacation.  And since I want to think college was a continual learning experience, I like to say that on that particular day, we learned a valuable lesson on the incompatibilty of shenanigans and Whoopie Pie.  We also learned that none of us were good hiders.

I have no idea what I’m trying to say here.  Just that I’m excited to see two of my closest college friends again.  I’m also pretty sure the story I just shared will make absolutely no sense to anyone besides MOW and Bob.

P.S. – if you ever doubted that I was a sentimental fool, here’s proof — after E’s tulips wilted and dried up, I kept the petals.

They’re dried up and over three years old and not so pretty anymore, but they’re very dear to me.  And if you didn’t think I was a huge weirdo before, I’m sure you do now.

P.P.S. – I love tulips.
