Washington, DC: The Sights

I’ve been so caught up in posting crazy non-DC-related things. I know you (all five of you who read this thing) are all very eager to see the sights too. We spent most of Saturday walking around downtown DC, being complete tourists. I might as well share the wealth! I’ll save the goofy pictures for another day. Tomorrow, maybe? I’m on a blogging roll, but I think I’m about to hit DC overload. Anyway, onto the attractions!

Actually, before I begin, I just want to say…the motorcycles, y’all! They were everywhere! Long processions of motorcycles stretching as far away as the eye could see. Call me naive, but I just never knew about the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally. Kind of cool. I used to want to be a biker chick too. No joke. Stop laughing!

On to the White House! First off, I’d like to say that the White House really isn’t as big as I thought it would be. It was a little anti-climactic. MOW and I wandered around for a good 15 minutes before finding it. Of course, being completely lost is pretty on par for any excursions that MOW and I take. At one point, we even noted aloud, “Oh, look at that huge group of tourists gathering over there!” and dismissed them, figuring they were looking at something less interesting. A squirrel, maybe? Ten minutes, we were back only to realize, Hello White House! Did I mention that’s how MOW and I roll? No Obama sighting though. Nuts!

I admit, we thought this was the White House when we first glimpsed it. You have to admit, it’s kind of the poster child for Washington DC. And when you think DC, you think White House right? It’s totally acceptable to be confused for a teeny tiny split second, right? I sure hope my social studies teachers aren’t reading this right now. They’d retroactively change my grade to a big fat F.

There were a lot of random (ok, not really random, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to know what they all were) buildings. This was one of my favorites. “Organization of American States”

What’s that up ahead? I started to get a little excited at this point.

Confession time: I’m sort of obsessed with the Lincoln Memorial. It was the one thing I was most excited to see when we were planning our sightseeing route. A storm had begun to roll in at this point. I think the stormy clouds kind of add a cool effect here.

Hello, Mr. Lincoln. I wrote an essay about you in elementary school. I think I got a gold star for it. I may or may not have had to fight another girl for you to be my Presidents assignment.

Isn’t this such an iconic view. This is what Martin Luther King, Jr. saw as he delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech. History happened on these very steps. I am seeing what Dr. King saw that day. Kind of surreal.

After that, we were pretty much pooped. But there was a whole lot more to see! More on that tomorrow! (Are you still here? Come back, ok? Thanks.)
